With crowds lining up since the night before, on Thursday at 10:00 doors opened to our brand new IKEA Bang Yai store in Bangkok. Covering more than 50,000 square metres, it has a number of features making it one-of-a-kind among IKEA stores.
“I love IKEA! When I heard this was the biggest store in the region, I wanted to be the first to come,” said Maliwan Mueanpetch, 45, having travelled one hour from her home to be first past the post together with three friends.
Awaiting her and the other customers pouring in were not only 50,278 square metres with a choice of more than 8,000 home furnishing products, but also two cafes, one classic IKEA restaurant and a new concept styled restaurant called HEM (home in Swedish), all set to cater hungry shoppers.
“Never before has the world seen an IKEA store so customer friendly,” said Christian Rojkjaer, MD of IKEA Southeast Asia, during a tree planting ceremony marking the official opening on 15 March 2018.
KEA Bang Yai is fully integrated with the CPN WestGate Mall, with entrances on three levels and another three facing the carpark. It is also Thailand’s first retail outlet meeting some of the world’s highest standards for sustainability, LEED Platinum and Green Mark Platinum.“The store layout is something we have never seen before, we are impressed so far!” said IKEA regular Pongmarine Kongsiri, further expressing her satisfaction of the welcoming attitude and high level of service of the co-workers.
And IKEA Bang Yai Store Manager Thomas Friberg was not late to join in on the praise for his team:
“I couldn’t be more proud of my new Thai family of 450 co-workers who have put a lot of hard work and dedication to reach this moment. Each of them deserves recognition for their efforts!”
