Sachi’s bold career leap and the endless possibilities at IKEA
When Sachi joined IKEA Tampines in Singapore in December 2020 as a Shopping Experience Manager, she brought with her a rich background in hospitality and retail. She had been an attendant on a national carrier who later transferred to the airlines’ premiere lounge to host VIP passengers. She then joined a global luxury brand to manage one of its boutiques in Singapore.
But after years in hospitality-focused roles, she longed for something new.
“I was drawn by the IKEA brand. And when I joined, I immediately felt that the culture was different to anything I experienced before.”
She joined the Customer Experience team in the throes of COVID-19 and after three successful years, she was instrumental in building up the IKEA Småland team and re-opening the famous children’s play area at IKEA Tampines.
With COVID-19 over and the world returning to a new normal, Sachi wanted another challenge – one that would take her out of the customer service line and far outside her comfort zone.
“I wanted to learn new skillsets. There was an opening for a Facilities Manager role and I studied hard for it. After some tough interviews, I managed to get it,” said Sachi, proudly.
In May 2024, Sachi found herself stepping into a male-dominated field with no prior technical experience. Determined to succeed, she took charge of her own learning – diving into YouTube tutorials, technical websites, and leaning on her team to master the ins and outs of facilities management.
Her efforts paid off. Within months, Sachi led her team to pass the SEC Check and renew the store’s Fire Certificate. But her impact didn’t stop there. As a sustainability ambassador, she has been instrumental in driving energy efficiency and waste reduction initiatives, including being part of the team overseeing the installation of a new solar panels at IKEA Tampines. She also inspires fellow co-workers through solar tours and sustainable action campaigns.
“I am proud that our team can make the customer and workplace experience safe for everyone who comes to IKEA Tampines.”
Sachi’s journey is a powerful reminder that by being brave and curious, there are many ways to renew and improve a career while making a positive impact on people and the planet.
